🧠 Overview
Dutasteride is a dual 5α-reductase inhibitor that blocks both type I and type II isoenzymes responsible for converting testosterone
to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By lowering DHT levels, it can reduce prostate volume in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
In clinical practice, dutasteride is prescribed to improve urinary symptoms associated with enlarged prostate and may reduce
the risk of acute urinary retention and need for BPH-related surgery. It is sometimes used in combination therapy with alpha-blockers,
depending on local labeling and patient profile.
Dutasteride has also been studied or used in other contexts (e.g., androgen-related conditions), but approved indications
vary by country. Always consult the official product leaflet for indication-specific guidance.
